Thurso drama group cheer the end of lockdown

Local amateur dramatic group and proud owners of the Mill Theatre, Thurso Players, has been cheered to hear the news about the end of lockdown and have plans afoot for the path back to normality.

In the summer, it intends to run a children’s workshop to feed in to the creation of a heritage display for the theatre lounge, reflecting the history of the Mill buildings and the Players. This workshop will get the young members of Thurso Juniors back into Thurso Players’ activity after a year out because of Covid-19.

Thurso Players has also been working on attracting support and funding for the restoration of the foundry building, part of the Mill/industrial buildings complex. The Players recently acquired the ruined building with the aim of supplementing its rehearsal and set building space. The group believes it has an important role to play alongside its neighbours, Thurso Youth Club, in saving these heritage structures for future generations whilst converting them to contemporary usage.

Thurso Players’ chairman, John Firth, commented: “Children are at the heart of our community, hence our efforts to try to get their lives back to normal. We really hope they enjoy this project and also learn about Thurso’s heritage.”

Thurso Players is keen that its work is visible to the public and funders alike so will be holding an open day later in the year.
