Thurso Players today announced that planning permission has been granted by Highland Council for the renovation of the Mill complex foundry building.

This milestone is a major move for the Players in its mission to bring the historic building back to life.

To help move into the next phase of development the group is now seeking an experienced grants officer to work with it on a voluntary basis.

“I am delighted that we have at long last achieved the significant milestone of having received planning permission and can now move to the next exciting phase of this massive project that will turn this derelict building in to an asset for the community,” said John Firth, chairman of Thurso Players.

He added: “For many years we have been looking for a suitable building for our set construction activities to free up the theatre for more performances and our juniors programme – the foundry building will be a fantastic asset.”

This news comes in the wake of many behind the-scenes accomplishments, securing the foundry for projected use within the expansion of the long-standing theatre club and saving this important old building for future generations.

Thurso Players is now looking for a public-spirited member of the community to help it secure and identify funding for the next phase of development.

Ideally the grants officer would:

  • help Thurso Players to identify and apply for grants and funding
  • be a dedicated "go to" person who can support the committee
  • be familiar and experienced with grants procedure processes

Any individual who lacks grants applications experience, but is willing to learn, will also be considered and guided by committee members.

“It has taken three years to get the project to this stage,” said John, “and it will be great to get someone on board to help us get the funding to take this project to the next stage so we can start work on the building.”

Thurso Players is a registered charity with the aim of encouraging the practice and development of drama in the local community. It owns and operates the Mill Theatre where the group rehearse and perform its productions and host professional shows when possible. Members come from all walks of life and it claims to have "a diverse and talented team both on and off stage".
