Stroma rescue is RNLI’s video of the year
FOOTAGE of Thurso lifeboat rescuing tourists from Stroma has been named as the RNLI video of the year.
It shows the volunteer crew on the lifeboat rescuing 12 people from rocks after their tour boat got into difficulties in a cave on Stroma.
The group of English holidaymakers became trapped in the sea cave during a sightseeing tour from John O’Groats in July.
All escaped unscathed following their 90-minute ordeal on the uninhabited island.
The award was announced at the RNLI Photographer of the Year award presentation held last Friday at the London Boat Show.

The tourists, all from the south of England, were about three-quarters of the way into the sightseeing cruise when the boat entered a cave at the Gloup, to the west of the island.
About 20 to 30 metres in three of the inflatable panels around the front of the vessel burst and the bow dipped, which resulted in the RNLI being called.
All 10 passengers and the two crew of the rigid-hulled inflatable tour boat clambered out and on to a rocky ledge where they were rescued by the lifeboat’s Y-boat in a two-metre swell.
The RNLI photography competition aims to find pictures and footage that reflect the lifesaving work of the RNLI. Volunteers, crew and lifeguards send in pictures to compete in four categories – lifeboats, lifeguards, rescues and seas.
