THE son whose parents were tragically killed at a level crossing in Caithness has agreed a five figure sum of compensation from Network Rail.

Donald Mackay sued the organisation over alleged safety issues which led to the death of Angus Mackay and Margaret Mackay from Inverness along with Donald Mackay from Latheron at Halkirk Level Crossing in 2009.

It has been reported that Mr Mackay has accepted an offer of compensation from Network Rail in an out of court settlement although the sum has not been disclosed.

The accident occurred when the car the three people were travelling in collided with a train at an unmanned, gate-free crossing.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch published a report following the incident and made six recommendations to improve safety. New barriers are set to be installed at the crossing next year.
