Wick Gala Week may not be running as planned this year due to the coronavirus epidemic but one notable event was very visible for anyone driving around the town and surrounding districts – the annual scarecrow competition.

Gala committee member Katrona Mackenzie explained: "We don't have a gala this year but we do have events that can be run from home.

"Over June we ran a competition for scarecrows and flowerpot men, and in July we want people to send in photos of previous gala days. In August we're having a garden competition."

Katrona said judging is in progress for the scarecrow and flowerpot men competition and the results will be available next week.

This year the scarecrow event was open to all Caithness residents and many of the imaginative entries can still be found across the county.

Katrona added: "We had a flowerpot men competition this year too as we thought people could use things to hand in their garden sheds."

Categories for the scarecrow competition are traditional scarecrow, original scarecrow and keyworker scarecrow.

Katrona said that everyone had done "a really great job" with their scarecrows this year.
