Mr Mackintosh (66), of Willowbank, Wick, joined the council from the army, where he served as a sergeant major.

He was initially based in the council housing department in Wick before moving to perform a similar role in Thurso. He was appointed the Thurso-based assistant ward manager in 2007.

Around 50 friends, former and present councillors and council staff gathered in the Girnigoe Street buildings for a function at the weekend at which Mr Mackintosh was presented with a sum of cash from his colleagues to go towards a forthcoming holiday in Belgium and two Frank Begg paintings from the council.
