Puffin Croft animals want a bite of the big cheque

Animals at a John O’Groats petting farm have plenty of food for thought after receiving over £300 from a local arts and crafts group.

On November 7, Elaine Rapson-Grant from Artisans North handed over a £310 cheque to Cara Young from Puffin Croft that at least one goat seemed keen to nibble.

Elaine said: “In total £310 was raised by Artisans North following its successful craft fairs and shows held at the Masonic Hall, Thurso throughout the year. This donation to Cara was raised after the deduction of hall charges from the table sales.”

Cara commented: “It was great to take Elaine round the farm to visit the animals and show them the cheque they have received.

“All the money goes to feeding the animals over winter – £310 covers the cost of feeding the rabbits and pigs for one month – and is an incredibly kind and generous donation that has a big impact for the furry gang on the farm.“

Elaine said it was her first time visiting the popular Groats petting farm and noted how the animals came over to check out the big cheque with some even trying to chew bits from it.

“It was incredible to see first-hand the huge amount of animals that Cara has rescued over the years. All the animals looked so happy and well looked after and every one of them came over to meet me to say hello – it was as if they knew why we were there.”

Elaine also handed over artworks to Cara, donated by Carey Jones, including acrylic animals on slate, a painted Puffin stone and a large recycled cloth stag’s head to sell in her shop over Christmas.

It costs from just £4 to feed a rabbit for a month to £12 to feed a pig.

Puffin Croft ran this fundraising initiative for the first time last year. Elaine said it was deemed a huge success and “made a monumental difference going through winter to all of Cara’s animals”.
