Care home residents in Thurso have been feeling the wind in their hair as they enjoy cruising about the town on a trishaw.
The Thurso branch of Cycling Without Age Scotland has been visiting Pentland View Care Home and taking residents and staff out on pedal-powered rides.
The group provides an opportunity for people to get out and about in the fresh air and enjoy the joys of cycling again. Seated safely in the purpose-built trishaw, passengers are then cycled around the town and local points of interest.
Residents have particularly enjoyed going round the boating pond and river, as well as riding along the esplanade at the beach. Often, they meet people who they know along the way and stop to chat, and they always enjoy waving to people when they are out and about.

Fiona Cameron, deputy manager at Pentland View, said: “Our residents love going out on the trishaw and we are really grateful to Cycling Without Age for all of their hard work in making this happen.
“They love seeing all the familiar places around Thurso and bumping into people they know. I went out, myself, with one of our residents and it was lovely to hear her giggling as we went over all the potholes, or getting excited when she saw the sea or we passed some pretty flowers.”
Activities coordinator Jeanine Sinclair added: “The residents really enjoy going out on the trishaw. It’s also a great opportunity for family and friends to join the residents for a meaningful time out together, making memories.”
Willie Bain, a resident at Pentland View and record-breaking cyclist himself, enjoyed talking all things cycling with the volunteers, sharing his favourite joke: “I could cycle half an hour in thirty minutes!”
Pentland View care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers. It provides residential care, nursing care and dementia care for number of residents from respite care to long-term stays.
