The countdown is under way to the 100th Latheron Show in 12 months’ time after the success of Saturday’s event at West Clyth Farm.

Despite overcast weather, with spells of light drizzle with only a few brief glimmers of sunshine, the expanded range of attractions kept the large crowd engaged and entertained throughout the day.

Raymond Gunn, president of Latheron Agricultural Society, reckoned the attendance was along similar lines to 2023 when the weather was glorious.

“I think it’s definitely as good as last year,” he said during a break from his duties in the afternoon. “We’re heading in the right direction and next year is the 100th.

“It’s like a snowball. You roll it down the hill and it gets bigger and bigger and bigger.”

One aspect he highlighted was the “huge” display of agricultural machinery and tractors. “We always used to have about half a dozen tractors and now there’s about 30,” he said.

Show secretary Joanne Smith said: “The show committee, local clubs and volunteers from around the county came together and helped us hold our biggest and best show yet. There really was something for everyone, and an action-packed programme meant the show field was busy all day despite some dull weather.

“We are grateful to the Lybster and Tannach Fund and Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Halsary Fund, Mey Games, Caithness District Young Farmers and all our helpers whose support made a huge difference.

“Work starts now in planning and preparation for our 100th show next year, to be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, so get the date in your diary!”

The organisers sought to broaden their audience this year, with innovations including a health and wellbeing marquee.

Mr Gunn emphasised the importance of mental health support to the farming industry.

“It’s one of the worst jobs in the world for mental health issues because it’s a lonely job,” he said. “There’s not that many people on the farm nowadays.

“Back in the day there would have been four or five people on the farm and the workload was spread. Now it’s often one person trying to do it all on a day-to-day basis.

“The other thing is the paperwork. A lot of people can do the physical work but when it comes to paperwork, all the hoops that have got to be jumped through nowadays to get to the other end... When you’re doing it all the time you sort of get better at it, and you catch on, but there’s always a new thing.”

Champion of champions at the 99th Latheron Show went to the supreme sheep champion and North Country Cheviot champion from Jamie Henderson, of Seaview Cottages, Dunnet – a home-bred gimmer after a Skirza tup.

The reserve champion of champions title went to Kimmy Lai, of Occumster, with her supreme horse champion, Ashlea’s Hollywood Showgirl, a five-year-old mare with her three-month-old foal, Arriebeg What a View, at foot.

Main ring entertainment was provided by Mark Wylie with his Drakes of Hazard stunt team – a group of Indian Runner ducks guided by a collie.

A family marquee was introduced this year and activities for youngsters include a bouncy castle, Nerf gun wall and kids’ sports. There was also input from the Royal Highland Education Trust, a charity dedicated to bringing farming and the working countryside to life.

Other highlights included Highland dancers, Caithness Youth Pipe Band, Melvich Gaelic Choir and Mr and Mrs Bubbles with walk-around entertainment.

Councillor Willie Mackay provided the commentary. He said: “It was a great privilege to be part of the commentary team along with Helen Budge at what turned out to be another successful Latheron Show.

“Although we always look for rays of sunshine at all our scheduled summer events, the overcast conditions on Saturday did little to dampen the tremendous enthusiasm and turnout of competitors and spectators from all around Caithness and beyond.

“The organisers and volunteers who worked hard to get the field ready can be very proud of themselves – and have no doubt plans in mind already for next year’s 100th Latheron Show.”
