Mart prices from Quoybrae and Thainstone

Quoybrae: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (April 13) sold 440 prime, store and feeding sheep.

Old season prime lambs (72) sold to 186.7p for 37.5kg Blackface from Westerloch and £84 gross for 53kg Texels from Brickigoe, Thrumster.

Old season store lambs (284) to £94 for Mule ewe hoggs from Ha, Bowermadden.

Feeding ewes and rams (84) to £90 for Suffolks from Quoybrae.

Quoybrae: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (April 6) sold 947 store cattle.

Bullocks (580) averaged 215.8p to 261.9p per kg for a pair of 336kg Limousin crosses from Boulintogle, Scotscalder and £1230 gross for a pair of 651kg Simmental crosses from 11 Lochend, Castletown.

Heifers (367) averaged 207.1p to 245.8p per kg for a pen of four 301kg Charolais crosses from 3 Forss, Thurso, and £1195 gross for a pen of three 584kg Charolais crosses from Aimster, Thurso.

Native bullocks sold to 228.9p for a pen of eight 367kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Killimster Mains, Wick, and £1170 for a 650kg Aberdeen Angus cross from Killimster Mains.

Native heifers sold to 206.1p for a pen of three 376kg Aberdeen Angus crosses from Bardnaclavan, Bridge of Westfield, and £1000 for a 574kg Aberdeen Angus from West Watten.

A good quality show of 947 grazing cattle were forward. Given the recent drop in deadweight prices heavier cattle were harder to cash, while smaller, younger sorts easily maintained recent trade. The best end of the native section also sold well, while plainer, older sorts were harder to sell.

Thainstone: Aberdeen and Northern Marts (April 2) had a total of 130 cast cows and prime cattle and sheep forward from Caithness, Ross-shire and Sutherland consignors with leading prices as follows:

Beef cows (10) sold to 148.6p per kg for a 730kg Aberdeen Angus cross and £1275 gross for a 970kg Aberdeen Angus cross from W Barnetson & Son, Lynegar, Watten.

Leading prices per head:

Lynegar (AAX) £1270, £1175; West Watten (Lim X) £925.

Leading prices per kg:

West Watten (Lim X) 142p; Lynegar (AA X) 139.8p, 131.4p; Burnside, Canisbay (Lim X) 130.6p.

Prime sheep (100):

Old season lambs sold to 206.3p per kg for and £97 for a pen of 43 Suffolks from J S R Moodie & Co, Rovie, Rogart.

Leading prices per head/kg – Suff: Rovie £89, 203.7p.

Feeding ewes and rams sold to £89.50 for Bluefaced Leicester rams from Rovie.
