The annual Caithness County Show is the latest local event to fall victim to the coronavirus crisis.

John Murray, president of Caithness Agricultural Society, said the decision had not been taken lightly but the organisers felt it was "the right thing to do".

He said: "Due to the situation regarding Covid-19, myself and the rest of the committee have decided the best option going forward is to postpone the Caithness County Show to 2021.

"This decision has not come lightly and has been discussed extensively. However, the safety and wellbeing of all who attend the show to support us and all who are involved in the organising is of the utmost importance to us. We feel this is the right thing to do."

The show was due to be held in Thurso on July 17-18 this year, but has been postponed until July 16-17, 2021.

Highlighting the amount of preparation that is carried out in the months leading up to the event, the president said: "The time and effort that has already been put in to the 2020 show is immense and hopefully we can carry that on to the show in 2021.

"Thank you all for the continued support and we hope to see everyone next year."

He added: "Myself and the committee would like to thank all the local businesses who have supported us year on year and remind everyone that in these uncertain times it is essential that we back our local community."

Anyone who has booked a stand or confirmed sponsorship for this year will be contacted by the show secretary.

The 2019 show in Wick attracted up to 6500 spectators.

Meanwhile, the Canisbay Show, due to be held on Saturday, July 4, has been cancelled. The organising committee also hopes to be back in action next year.
