March ends on a high as Wick experiences warmest day so far

High temperatures of up to 18C are expected across Caithness this week as Wick experienced its warmest day of the year so far on Monday.

Weather watcher and long-time John O’Groats Journal columnist Keith Banks reported that the much-welcomed change in the weather saw temperatures nudge 17C (62.6F) across favoured parts of the county during the early part of the afternoon.

In Wick, a moderate westerly breeze coupled with sunny intervals saw the mercury hit an impressive 16.7C (62.1F) at 12.40pm, making the last day of March the town’s warmest day of the year so far.

The average daily maximum for Wick in March is just 8.1C (46.6F).

Mr Banks explained: “The advent of the fine settled conditions and the unseasonably warm temperatures has been caused by a large area of high pressure that has developed as it moved north-eastwards across the British Isles during Sunday.

“The next few days will remain fine and settled with increasing amounts of sunshine across Caithness, but with the winds backing into the south-south-east by Thursday, Wick and other parts exposed to the breeze will see temperatures a little lower than those experienced on Monday.

“However, Thurso, Castletown and Reay, together with sheltered inland spots such as Watten and Halkirk, are likely to witness daytime highs of 17C-18C (63F-64F) during the next few days.”
