Thousands of people across Scotland have signed up to help tackle the country’s litter emergency.

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful's Spring Clean 2023 began today (17 March) with almost 15,000 people having confirmed their participation across 246 events. There are 73 schools registered with events happening in all 32 local authority areas. However, the charity want that number to be even bigger and are encouraging more people to get involved.

Spring Clean is the perfect opportunity to make a difference and the charity is calling on communities, schools, businesses and other organisations to play their part.

The Scottish Litter Survey, which was published in December last year, highlighted the negative impact litter is continuing to have across the nation. Litter remains a significant issue of public concern with 67 per cent believing that litter is a problem in their local area, while 87 per cent that it is an issue across Scotland.

With the inaugural Litter League beginning earlier this month and their partnership with LitterLotto offering weekly prizes between £50 and £500, now is the perfect time for people of all ages to get involved, have some fun and help clean up Scotland.

Barry Fisher, CEO of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “We’ve already seen a fantastic number of people commit to our Spring Clean but we know that many more communities could join us. there are many more people litter picking who haven’t yet signed up.

“The litter issue across Scotland is as bad as it has ever been and the best way to tackle the problem is for more people to work together, and for us to collectively show the ground swell of support for more strategic action to turn the tide on litter."

Why not organise a litter pick with friends, family, workmates or your wider community? Or find one to join in with on Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Clean Up Scotland map. There are now almost 150 Hubs across the country where you can borrow equipment too.
