Highland Council will be making arrangements to investigate the cause of the "sinkhole" that opened up in the middle of a Wick street.

The hole near the top of Dempster Street, near the Malcolm Street junction, has been estimated by members of the public as being about six feet deep.

The issue was raised at the March meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council.

The gap in the road has been covered up, with traffic cones and "keep left" signs put in place.

A Highland Council spokesperson said: “The signage at Dempster Street in Wick was erected by Highland Council for safety while the council programmes investigative works into the cause.”

She added that the local authority has "no further information at present on the timing of the investigative works".

The matter was highlighted last week by Rona Morrison, a co-opted member of the community council. She reported that "something like a sinkhole" had appeared in Dempster Street.

She said: "There are photos on social media and there's speculation about how deep it is – some folk are saying about two metres, which is about six feet."
