Concern has been raised over a "sinkhole" that has opened up in a Wick street and is estimated to be about six feet deep.

It was highlighted at the March meeting of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council by co-opted member Rona Morrison

She reported that "something like a sinkhole has appeared" in the middle of Dempster Street.

"I've been asked about it, if I could bring it up," she said. "There are photos on social media and there's speculation about how deep it is – some folk are saying about two metres, which is about six feet.

"My concern is when you've got cars parked on both sides, if an ambulance or fire engine needs to come down there, there's not going to be room to get past."

Highland Council leader Raymond Bremner, who represents Wick and East Caithness, said: "It's the first place I'll go to when I leave here."

The hole, close to the junction with Malcolm Street, has been covered over. There are traffic cones positioned beside it and "keep left" road signs on either side.
