Scottish coronavirus vaccine programme administers four millionth first dose; milestone came as 34 new Covid-19 cases were detected across NHS Highland area over the past day

A MAJOR milestone has been reached in the fight against Covid-19 in Scotland – after it was confirmed that more than four million first-doses of the vaccine have now been administered.
As of this morning, some 4,000,658 people have received their first injection, while almost 3.11 million have had their second jag.
Meanwhile, there were 34 fresh positive tests for the coronavirus across the NHS Highland area in the past 24 hours.
The cumulative number of confirmed cases across the health board region increased from 8899 to 8933 on Tuesday.
There were 1044 positive tests across Scotland in the past 24 hours, or 5.6 per cent of all tests during that period.
Some 472 people were receiving hospital treatment for the virus in Scotland last night – a fall of eight from Monday.
Of those, 63 were in intensive care. This was down by one.
Sadly another seven people have died after testing positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.
Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were 18 new cases in NHS Eileanan Siar, which saw its overall total rise to 409. NHS Shetland reported three fresh infections, and NHS Orkney detected two, to take their running tallies to 377 and 152 respectively.
Eighty-four fresh cases were detected in NHS Grampian in the past day, for a total of 22,791.
And there were 53 positive tests in NHS Tayside – for a tally of 26,341.
There have now been 342,059 positive tests for the virus across Scotland since the pandemic began.
