FIFTY-six new positive tests for Covid-19 have been recorded across the NHS Highland region in the past 24 hours.

The region’s cumulative number of known infections since the start of the pandemic rose from 8843 to 8899 when the latest daily update was released on Monday.

Twenty-two people were receiving treatment for the virus across NHS Highland’s hospitals last night – the highest number for five months.

It is not known how many of those are currently in intensive care, as figures lower than five are not shown in the data, but the total did reach five at one point over the weekend – the first time any figure was registered in this category since March 2.

Exactly 1000 new cases of Covid-19 were detected across Scotland in the past 24 hours – or eight per cent of all people tested over that period.

Some 475 were receiving treatment for the virus in Scottish hospitals last night – down five from Sunday.

Of those, 65 were in intensive care, which was up by one.

No further deaths were reported among people who tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days, although most registry offices are typically closed at weekends.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland there were no new cases overnight in NHS Orkney, while NHS Shetland and NHS Eileanan Siar each registered four cases apiece – taking their respective totals to 374 and 391.

NHS Grampian’s cumulative total rose to 22,707 after a further 82 positive tests overnight.

And there were 65 newly-confirmed cases in NHS Tayside, for a rolling tally of 26,288.

There have now been 341,015 known Covid-19 infections in Scotland since the pandemic began.

Almost four million adults in Scotland have now received their first dose of the vaccine, while more than 3.09 million have had their second.
