A WICK doctor has expressed his appreciation to a Caithness distillery for providing alcohol-based hand sanitiser to medical practices within the county.

Thanking the team at Dunnet Bay Distillers, Dr Ewen Pearson said: "We know there have been shortages and even people stealing hand gel in other parts of the country. I think this shows a very kind and generous community spirit in Caithness.

"I would also like to add that the NHS is working flat out just now. We are working differently, using phone and video consultations, and we prefer people to phone rather than attend medical practices unless advised to do so by a doctor or nurse."

Dr Pearson, who is based at Wick Medical Centre, added: "We would encourage people to follow the social distancing guidelines if they are at risk."

The Dunnet distillery that makes Rock Rose Gin decided to do its bit for the community and make hand sanitiser as demand for the product grew.

Claire Murray, co-founder of the award-winning company, said they had now created their third batch of the product which is made to World Health Organisation guidelines. It is being made available free to local medical practices and care homes in both Wick and Thurso.

She said: "We have limited supplies and if those on the front line still want it they should send us an email."
