Cyclist Evan Oliphant to tackle road race on final Games day
EVAN Oliphant will be the county’s final hope of ending its 32-year wait for a Commonwealth medal when he competes in the cycling road race on the final day of the Games.
The Milton cyclist, who has made eight appearances in the Tour of Britain – more than any other British rider – will set off on his quest for a medal when he pedals the streets of Glasgow on Sunday afternoon.
Oliphant has already competed at two events at Glasgow 2014, finishing 10th overall in the 40km points race and reaching the final for the 20km points race, both at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Lybster cyclist John Paul also competed at the velodrome but failed to qualify for the top 12 round of the men’s sprint. He finished 11th overall in the keirin.
Watten shooter Sarah Henderson finished seventh in the 50-metre prone rifle event on Monday.
The last time a Caithness athlete won a Commonwealth Games medal was back in 1982 when William MacNeill, from Castletown, won gold in the air rifle competition and bronze in the three position event.
