Cycle challenge for ex-Thrumster man

A FORMER Caithness man will be cycling 900 miles in 10 days for charity next month.

Navigating Officer John Sinclair (32) is part of a team cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money for Gib?MissionAfricaUK.

Mr Sinclair, who grew up in Thrumster, moved to Plymouth when he joined the Royal Navy in 1996. He is currently finishing a mates

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead. I’ve not done anything like this before but have been cycling 200 miles a week to train for the event.”

The team, which includes six cyclists and two people in a support van, will be setting off from its starting point at Groats on August 1. Participants aim to cycle an average of 90 miles each day, staying overnight at various campsites as they make their way down the country, finally reaching Land’s End on August 10.

Mr Sinclair added: “I have always loved cycling. It was my Dad who first got me interested in bikes.

“We hope to raise £1000 each which will go towards a clinic in a rural area of Ethiopia.”

GibMissionAfricaUK was set up in 2010 and its objectives include relieving the poverty of young people by the provision of grants to enable them to participate in healthy recreational activities that they could not otherwise afford.
