College to run online cyber-security courses after business tie-up
ONLINE cyber-security courses are to be run by North Highland College UHI thanks to a new venture with a Thurso-based, award-winning security specialist.
The college's partnership with Cyber Security Scotland will create a Cyber Security Institute to fulfil a market need in cyber-related skills development, awareness training and software product creation.
Dr Keith Nicholson, founder and executive chairman of Cyber Security Scotland, said: "North Highland College is an ideal partner for us. The college has connections across the Highlands, a reputation for innovation and an excellent track record in practical training delivery. I am delighted that the college has agreed the venture and am looking forward to working together on this exciting project."
Creation of the Cyber Security Institute is the next step in delivering our vision.
He continued: "The institute brings together the respective strengths and expertise of both organisations to create an initiative that will benefit Thurso, the Highlands and wider Scotland.
"This initiative reinforces Cyber Security Scotland’s long-standing commitment to supporting the local community. Our cyber-security services are helping to save Scotland from cyber attacks and protecting public services. The standards and models we have created have gained Cyber Security Scotland a reputation for innovative, creative work that is dependable, delivered on time and on budget.

Debbie Murray, director of enterprise and innovation at the college, said: “North Highland College UHI is delighted to be offering online industry-relevant courses in cyber security through the college’s innovative new joint venture with Cyber Security Scotland, an award-winning centre of national repute based here in Caithness.”
The initiative is support by Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP Gail Ross. She said: "I am delighted to see this joint venture being created, particularly at a time when the Scottish Government is actively encouraging the digital economy throughout rural Scotland.
"The SNP's recent Programme for Government reaffirms our party's commitment to supporting the digital economy as well as supporting our higher and further education establishments.
"We want to see high-quality jobs for Caithness and the wider Highlands and this initiative will provide our young people with the tools they need to have meaningful careers in the digital security sector."
