SINGERS from Caithness and north Sutherland pulled off a major coup at this year’s national Mod when they won the overall Fluent Rural Choirs competition

Members of Melvich Gaelic Choir were in raptures when they swept the boards and lifted the Lorn Shield at the event in Oban which finished at the weekend.

The 40-plus strong choir, the majority of whom are from Caithness, just missed out on the overall championship last year when they finished second.

However, this year there was no doubt the far north choir were the biggest stars on the stage as they won both the Gaelic and music sections to walk away with the overall title.
