A plea has gone out for new volunteers to join a committee dedicated to helping patients in the county's main hospital.

The League of Friends of Caithness General Hospital would welcome "new blood" at its annual general meeting in the Norseman Hotel, Wick, next week.

Members of the group raise funds for “equipment or any material things for patient comfort”, according to chairperson Annette Sinclair.

“It's only for Caithness General. We don't give to the Town and County or the Dunbar,” she pointed out.

“We just need to get new blood to come in with new ideas for fundraising."

Earlier this year the League of Friends part-funded the purchase of an AccuVein machine for use in the hospital's outpatient department. The equipment, which illuminates veins under the skin, making it easier to take blood, cost over £3000 – with the League of Friends donating half the cost.

Traditionally there is a handover of items to the hospital in the run-up to Christmas.

“It is satisfying to know that you are helping patients," Mrs Sinclair said.

"At Christmas each ward is allocated a certain amount of money and they come back to us with things that they want for each of their areas. The hospital staff are grateful for it.

“There's an ongoing need for emergency packs. These are for people that come in, in an emergency, without anything.”

The annual general meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 28, at 4pm.

"It's a very friendly group," Mrs Sinclair said. "They can join us for coffee and cake at four o'clock."
