A new BBC Scotland documentary about the murder of Renee MacRae and her son will air next week on their channels.

Police hope that the release of Murder Trial: The Disappearance of Renee and Andrew MacRae might help uncover new information or witnesses in the search of Renee and Andrew MacRae's bodies.

Last year, the then 81-year-old William MacDowell – who had been arrested in 2019 – was convicted of the murder of Mrs MacRae (36) and her son Andrew (3) in 1976.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a punishment period of 30 years – however he died in February 2023 while serving his sentence.

Mrs MacRae and Andrew left their home in Inverness on November 12, 1976, heading south on the A9.

Her BMW car was discovered on fire in a lay-by near Dalmagarry later that evening.

Neither Mrs MacRae nor Andrew have been seen since and their bodies have never been found.

The documentary will be broadcast in two parts – the first episode will air on BBC Scotland on August 22 at 10pm and the second on August 29, and both will be available on iPlayer from next Tuesday.
