WICK Lifeboat was launched after a small vessel was reported floating almost 30 miles off the east Caithness coast with nobody aboard.

The skipper of the Cordelia-K fishing boat contacted Shetland Coastguard at 1.15 on Wednesday afternoon after spotting the abandoned 16 foot-long open-topped vessel.

Rescue teams verified the boat September Mist had drifted along the Moray coast from Fraserburgh after crashing against rocks on the north-east coast last week.

Wick Lifeboat took the vessel in tow but during the operation, due to its damaged condition, the September Mist sank 15 miles from the port.
