Wick Academy’s under-18s bounced back in style from their defeat to Inverness Athletic with an 8-0 home victory over Rothes to set up a potential league decider against Inverness Balloan at Harmsworth Park on Sunday.

The young Scorries started brightly in last weekend’s SHFL Under 18 North encounter and took the lead on eight minutes when Joshua Hughes set up John Hooker for a tap-in.

On 20 minutes Sam Shearer was brought down in the box and Owen Bain stepped up to convert the penalty. Hughes produced a fine finish after good work by Hooker to put Wick three up at the break.

Louis Hancock smashed home the fourth from the edge of the box. Jayden Bremner then ran through on goal and calmly slotted past the goalkeeper.

Owen Bain added his second and Wick’s sixth with a wonderful strike from outside the box.

Lewis Swan made it seven with a brilliant diving header and Hancock completed the scoring with his second of the game, a thunderbolt from 16 yards.

Coach Derek Shearer said: “It was good to get back to winning ways after last week’s 4-1 defeat.

“The lads played well. Rothes worked hard and never gave up.

“It sets us up for Sunday’s match against Inverness Balloan. We need to win to stay in the title hunt so we’ll give it all we’ve got.

“The boys have had a sensational season and their commitment to training and games has been brilliant. We’ve got 20 at training every week so credit to our entire squad for getting us into the position we’re in.”
