Wick Academy’s under-18s were praised for digging deep as they kept up their 100 per cent league record with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over their Clach counterparts in Inverness.

Jayden Bremner scored twice in Sunday's match, including a spot-kick winner, as the young Scorries made it 17 wins in a row in SHFL Under 18 North.

Clach started well on the all-weather pitch at Millburn Academy and Daniel MacDonald missed two gilt-edged chances. Wick came back into it and Bremner had a goal disallowed for offside.

Not to be denied, on 40 minutes Bremner raced on to a long through ball and calmly slotted it in to put Academy one up at half-time.

Clach continued to press in the second half and were denied twice by goal-line clearances by Connor Davidson and Lewis Swan.

On 63 minutes Joshua Hughes did brilliantly down the right wing and cut the ball back to Owen Bain, who smashed it off a post. It came back to Bain who reversed the ball into the far corner to make it 2-0.

A minute later a Clach inswinging corner was headed into the net by Jason Minard to reduce the deficit. Then a counter-attack ended with a near-post toe-poke by Shaun Clare to put the Inverness side on level terms.

With 78 minutes gone, John Hooker was taken down in the box and Bremner scored from the resultant penalty.

Coach Derek Shearer said: “We weren’t at our best, and rode our luck at times, but huge credit to the boys – they dug deep and managed to come away with three points.

“Clach are a very good side and probably in a false position in the league. I can’t praise the boys highly enough to get to 17 games and 17 wins in a very competitive league – a remarkable achievement.”

The Wick under-18s are at home to Lossiemouth this Sunday.
