WEEK seven in the Wick Wheelers 10-mile time trials returned to the normal route on a difficult night.

Youngsters Curtis Coghill (35.39) and Callum Sutherland (33.20) posted good times on the windy night. Robert Cormack came in fifth with a time of 30.49 while Joan Henry finished fourth on a time of 29.59. Ben Arnold finished third with a time of 27.48 and Brian Grant finished second on 26.47.

The day before he left to do his Land’s End to John O’Groats charity cycle, Graeme Clyne (25.14) shocked everyone by beating his personal best time on the course by 29 seconds to take his sixth win in a row on the windy evening.

Week eight in the series saw 17 take part with four riders from Caithness Cycle Club, and with Clyne away, his winning run would end.

The club’s young riders were out and Coghill got his personal best time of 34.30, Liam Beales came home in 33.29 and Callum Sutherland earned his personal best time of 32.05.

Paul Bremner came in at 30.35 while first-timer Keith Warhurst recorded 30.17.

Willie Sinclair posted a 29.55 and Joan Henry finished on 29.37. Les Oliphant (29.14) finished behind Helen Richard (38.37). Caithness Cycling Club members Phil Cartwright (28.16) and Allan Sutherland (27.48) finished seventh and sixth respectively. Youngster Ben Arnold finished in fifth (27.06) and CCC’s Rob Murdoch finished fourth (26.44).

In the Wick Wheelers’ points table the pressure was on Charlie Mackay and Brian Grant which ended with both riders coming in on the same time of 26.34, missing out on the overall 30 points on offer. CCC’s David Morrill finished with the fastest time of 24.59.

Meanwhile, Wick Wheelers honorary member Evan Oliphant ,who cycles for Team Endura professionally, posted his fifth win in the Scottish Road Race Championships in Balfron, Stirlingshire. He stormed to victory after breaking clear from the other riders on the final lap of the 82-mile, 11-lap event to retain his crown.
