Caithness P4/5s on the attack in Saturday’s friendly tournament in Invergordon.

FIVE Caithness teams played at the Ross Sutherland junior rugby tournament on Saturday – one micros (Primary 1-3), two P4/5s and two P6/7s.

The micros who made the journey to Invergordon were: Liam Flavell, Lewis Gill, Brandon Grant, Finlay Gunn, Andrew Hewitson and Rhianna Mackay.

They took part in a round-robin tourney with micro teams from Moray and Ross Sutherland – each team playing the other teams twice. Over the course of the afternoon, every Caithness player scored at least one try each.

Ross Sutherland awarded a medal to Liam for best player and to Finlay for most improved player for his stunning tackling. Lewis Gill was presented with the trophy for the best micro as he always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

Both Caithness and Highland P4/5s entered an A and a B team against teams from Ross Sutherland, Moray and Strathspey.

The most improved players were Alan Mathieson for the A team and Max Kennedy for the B team. Leon Beardsley won the best player’s medal for the A team and Joe Anderson for the B team.

Scott MacDonald was picked by the Caithness coaches to receive a trophy for P4/5’s while Ross Sutherland chose Colin Campbell (Caithness B) as the overall best player in the P4/5 age group.

Caithness entered two teams in the P6/7 tourney and, after a slow start, the youngsters got their heads together and played some strong, free-flowing rugby with good passing and support play.

A few of the more experienced players were not in attendance, due to holidays and other commitments, so there was a great effort by some of the younger players while the older members really stepped up their game as well.

Results for Caithness P6/7s: Caithness A 0 Ross Sutherland A 6; Caithness A 5, Ross Sutherland B 3; Caithness A 4, Nairn 3; Caithness B 0 Ross Sutherland A 6; Caithness B 3 Moray 6; Caithness B 5 Ross Sutherland B 1; Caithness B 5 Strathspey 1; Caithness B 5 Highland B 0; Caithness B 3 Nairn 0.

The squad, with the tries they scored in brackets, were: Lewis Paterson (1), Lewis Mackay (6), Jack Gill (10), Robbie Gunn, Daniel Gunn, Kyle Mackenzie (1), Kyler Casper (1), Louise Gunn (1), Craig Rollo (4), Scott Campbell (3), Jack Sibbald (1), James MacDonald, David Rudhall, Owen Mathieson and Murray Mackenzie.

Ross Sutherland medals were awarded to Kyler for best player and Kyle for most improved player in the Caithness A team.

The Caithness B team recipients were Jack Gill for best player and Jack Sibbald for most improved player.

Caithness coaches awarded their accolade to James who has stepped up, now that he has become one of the senior members of the squad.
