Young Caithness drivers competed well in the first round of this year's Scottish Super Series, hosted by North of Scotland Kart Club.

There were 96 entries from all over Scotland, with practice on Saturday followed by racing on Sunday in eight sections.

The Caithness drivers can be pleased with their efforts considering the size of the opposition.

The Bambino class had five entries and seven-year-old Jack Elder, from Dunbeath, took third place. Jack has just started karting this year so was delighted with his podium finish.

Nineteen drivers were fighting for top spot in the tough Honda cadets section.

Darren Bain (12), from Wick, drove well all weekend. He had a few issues in the heats but put these behind him to finish in ninth place.

Ten-year-old Ian Campbell, from Watten, started karting at the end of last year. He too had some problems in the heats but finished 17th overall, picking up the award for best novice driver in his section.

Jack Ryan (17), from Castletown, was among the 10 entrants in the KZ gearbox class. On the Saturday practice Jack was on the pace and delighted with his times when disaster struck – his engine blew up, leaving him with no engine for the Sunday.

However, Stevie Moir, who wasn’t competing, came to the rescue and gave him his engine. Jack had a great race, breaking the lap record time at Golspie, and finished in second place.

The Scottish Super Series is a four-round championship taking in the four registered circuits in the Association of Scottish Kart Clubs.

The next round is at Boyndie on June 11.

Golspie is hosting the Scottish championship at the end of July.
