Caithness Seconds were at the wrong end of a rout when they completed the first phase of the North Caley 3 league with a double header against Stornoway in Invergordon on Saturday.

They ran into a Western Isles side chasing the seemingly Herculean task of displacing long-time leaders Kinloss Eagles.

To do so they had to win and make up a points differential of 133.

As the game counted for double spoils, they had to score 67 more than the Yellows.

A frantic push in the closing 10 minutes saw the Lewismen score three times to rack up a 76-5 win – just enough to climb above the Moray outfit.

Their tries came from Aidan Millar (3), Mike Shuten (2), Alick Graham, Drew Maynard, Calum May, Angus Jenkins, Cammy McClements, Lewis Mackay and Allan Farrell, who added eight conversions.

Caithness grabbed their consolation score near the end after their pack drove over the line from a five-metre lineout.

Drew Mitchell and Henry Watkinson, playing his first game in a contested front row, stood out for the Yellows, who featured the father-and-son duo of back-rower Mike Flavell and 17-year-old centre Liam, another debutant.

The league now splits, with the top and bottom halves of the Highland and north-east sections combining for a further round of four matches.
