Caithness karting competitor Darren Bain won the first round of the Northern Challenge at the Littleferry track in Golspie at the weekend.

Darren (12), from Wick, races his Zip Kart in Honda Cadets.

There were 11 competitors in his class on Sunday, including Andrew Sutherland (10), from Thurso, who took third spot, and Ian Campbell (10), from Watten, who finished in fifth place.

Darren started the day well, going from ninth to third in heat one. Tyre issues in heat two saw him drop back from third to fourth and in heat three he went from sixth to first.

That qualified Darren in third position for the final where he moved up to second place by lap two.

Darren and his team-mate Vinny Lewis (10), from Aberdeen, worked together to pull a big lead from the rest of the group but with two minutes to go the racing started between the front two.

A last-lap collision saw the two of them T-boned together on the corkscrew section of the track but they made it over the line in first and second.

The final round of the Northern Challenge takes place at the Boyndie circuit near Banff in two weeks.

Jack Elder (7), from Dunbeath, raced brilliantly all weekend at the Northern Challenge.

Jack managed to hold off and beat the Scottish Super Series champion to take the win in the Bambino class.

He too will be heading down to Boyndie for the second round.
