Winners crowned on court at Caithness Badminton Championships in Thurso and Wick

Winners were crowned at the Caithness Junior Badminton Championship in Thurso and Wick.

A total of 17 competitors took part in the under-17 championships with nine boys and eight girls in action at the tournament.

Chloe Mackenzie was crowned winner of the girls’ competition as she beat runner-up Kirsty Henderson 21-10, 21-10. Mackenzie beat third place Ava Cook 21-10, 21-20. Henderson beat Cook 21-16, 21-16.

Lewis Swan was crowned the winner of the boys’ competition.

Six boys played in a round-robin style competition with each playing five matches.

Taylor Swan was runner-up with Arran Johnson in third place.

Chloe Mackenzie and Chloe Begg, were crowned winners in the girls’ doubles with Ava Cook and Kirsty Henderson finishing in runner-up spot.

The doubles followed the same format as the singles with four teams taking part.

Each partnership played three games. The deciding game of the round robin saw Mackenzie and Begg defeat Cook and Henderson 21-16, 21-12.

The Boys’ Doubles followed the same format as the singles with four teams taking part, each partnership playing three games.

The deciding game of round robin after both pairs winning all other games was between Ormlie brothers Taylor and Lewis Swan and Ormlie duo Arran Johnson and Matthew Cook.

The brothers came out on top 21-11, 22-20.

The mixed doubles followed a similar format of two pools of four teams then with play-offs, the top two teams in each pool went to the main draw and the bottom two in each pool went to the consolation cup.

The main draw semi-finals saw Kirsty Henderson and Taylor Swan take on Mathew Cook and Kate Durrand with Ormlie duo Henderson and Swan winning 15-10 and 15-11.

The second semi-final was an all Ormlie affair as it saw Chloe Mackenzie and Arran Johnson beat Ava Cook and Lewis Swan 15-7, 15-11 to secure their place in the final of the competition.

The final saw Chloe Mackenzie and Arran Johnson beat Kirsty Henderson and Taylor Swan 21-17, 21-13.

The consolation final was won by Murray Mackay and Antonia Beattie who beat Ronin Kean and Chloe Begg 14-21, 21-7, 21-16.

Tournament spokeswoman Kerry Mackenzie said it was an excellent competition.

She said: “Once again, we saw some fantastic games and rallies, with all competitors showing good sportsmanship throughout the tournament.”
