WICK Academy’s under-17 team were left kicking their heels as last Sunday’s final league match of the season against Fort William was postponed hours before kick-off.

It had been set up to be a big day for the young Scorries as a win against Fort at Harmsworth Park would have seen them clinch the league title.

A grand day in the making – but early on Sunday morning, word came from the west Highland side that they would not be able to fulfil the fixture having been unable to cobble a team together.

Fans have been wondering if this means Wick are granted a walkover victory by default and, with it, the title.

However, Academy U17s boss James Robertson insists that will not be the case and both sides will be attempting to get the fixture back on this Sunday.

He said: “No, there won’t be a case of Fort William having to forfeit the match. This fixture will be played this Sunday at Harmsworth Park with a 2pm kick-off.

“Even if the league did force Fort William to default because of what happened, the boys would not have liked to have won the league title like that. They would have liked the opportunity to win it on the pitch – and so would I.

“I was unable to make it last Sunday in any case as I was running in the Stirling half marathon. When I finished, my phone was packed full of messages telling me that the game was off.

“It’s a pity for the lads but also for the coaching staff at Fort William – I’ve a lot a sympathy for them.

“They are good guys, who are very genuine and do a lot of hard work to promote the game in their area – they’ll be very disappointed as well.

“However, we’ll just have to wait a week and we look forward to hosting them this Sunday.”
