Wick Wheelers and Caithness Cycling Club held their annual inter-club time trial, hosted this year by the Wheelers and going from Thurso to Wick.

The event is primarily a get-together of the county’s two cycling clubs, with the emphasis very much on taking part, and organisers were pleased to see the Wick ladies out in force.

There are no individual awards and the team award is based not on the usual first three riders but – to make it more inclusive – on the first eight in each club. Wick were again the stronger team and, led by Stuart Anderson, had an aggregate time of 7hr 8 min 3 sec, to Caithness CC’s 7hr 25 min 52 sec.

The Wheelers provided hospitality and home baking afterwards.

Earlier in the week Caithness Cycling Club held week 12 of its regular 10-mile time trials. Once again a strong south wind precluded fast times and riders took five minutes or more longer on the outward leg than on the return.

Iain Miller posted the fastest time and, although nearly a minute outside his season’s best, this was closest that anyone got to their 2023 times. Martine Hughes was only two minutes outside hers, despite having competed in all three events in the Festival of Cycling two days earlier.

Results: 1 Iain Miller, 26 min 07 sec; 2 Angus MacKay, 28.07; 3 Scott Phares, 29.18; 4 Alasdair Washington, 30.07; 5 Gary Angus, 30.11; 6 Martine Hughes, 36.11.

Wick Wheelers' 10-mile time trial (week 12): 1 Stuart Anderson, 21.52; 2 Iain Nicolson, 23.59; 3 Hamish McAllan, 24.05 (PB); 4 Alister Miller, 25.43; 5 Ewen Scott, 27.49; 6 Lisa Coghill, 30.25; 7 David Oman, 30.55 (PB).
