Members of Wick Triathlon Club have been competing in events as far afield as Orkney and Ireland.

Lisa Coghill and David Sutherland took part in the Stromness Sprint Triathlon organised by Orkney Tri Club. This was a sprint distance event involving a 750m open-water swim, a 20km undulating cycle and a 5km run.

The event was well attended with 30 participants. Orkney is scheduled to host the International Island Games in 2025 and the Orkney club used this event as a trial run.

David, who has competed in numerous countries including Canada, Mexico, Australia and Russia as a British age group triathlete, was first in his category in a time of 1:32:22, while Lisa was second in her age group. Both said they enjoyed the event and can’t wait to go back next year.

Louise Sinclair travelled to Cork in Ireland to compete in an Ironman event which normally involves a 3.8km sea swim, a 180km cycle and a full marathon 42.2km. However, due to the stormy sea state, the swim section was shortened to 1.9km.

The event was overshadowed by the deaths of two male competitors who got into difficulties in separate incidents in the swim section.

Louise, an experienced Ironman distance triathlete, reported that the swim was the most difficult she had ever experienced.

“At one point I was flipped over by a wave and when I surfaced I was facing in the wrong way,” she said.

Louise went on to complete the event in a time of 13hr 29 min.

Kenny MacGruer and Debbie Larnach both took part in the Scottish National Middle-Distance Championships which comprises a 1.9km open-water swim, 90km cycle and 21.1 km (half-marathon) run.

There were 275 competitors taking part in this event at Loch Tay, Kenmore.

Kenny stormed the course and completed it in 5hr 27 min, finishing 19th in his age category and 88th overall.

Debbie blasted through the course in a time of 5hr 45 min to become the Scottish champion in her age group.
