Wick Academy will be looking for a positive response against Turriff United on Saturday after suffering a humiliating 8-0 defeat to Ross County in the North of Scotland Cup first round.

The Scorries crashed out of the North of Scotland Cup on Wednesday night after suffering one of the heaviest defeats in their history.

Academy suffered a nightmare start after five minutes when Joe Anderson was sent off as he received a straight red card for a foul at the edge of the box.

From the resultant free-kick, Jay Henderson fired the ball straight past Graeme Williamson into the net.

The Staggies fielded a number of players who have played in the Premiership and they showed their class as they ran riot at Harmsworth Park.

County doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Alex Samuel got his first of the night.

Academy looked like going into the break only two goals down, but the Staggies managed to find two more goals in added time before the break to kill the game off as a contest.

Samuel grabbed his second of the night after he finished off a rapid counter attack.

Henderson then pounced on a slack back pass to fire past Williamson to give them a 4-0 advantage at half time.

Henderson, who was on loan at Caley Thistle last season from St Mirren, before moving to Ross County in the summer, completed his hat-trick to make it 5-0 after 49 minutes.

Three minutes later, Samuel completed his hat-trick as Wick Academy found themselves 6-0 down after 52 minutes.

Alister Morrison scored Ross County’s seventh in the 65th minute.

Jordy Hiwula then converted a penalty two minutes later to complete the rout.

Manager Gary Manson will be looking for a response from his players as they prepare to welcome Turriff United at Harmsworth Park.

The Scorries will be looking for their second win of the campaign as they find themselves in 13th place.

They take on a Turriff United team that find themselves in ninth place in the Highland League.

The Aberdeenshire outfit have won three of their five matches.

However, they will also be looking to bounce back after being knocked out of the Highland League Cup last week, losing 4-0 to Buckie Thistle.

In the other North of Scotland Cup first round matches on Wednesday, Brora Rangers cruised to a 6-2 win over North Caledonian League outfit Fort William.

Forres Mechanics are also in the next round with a 4-0 win over Strathspey.

Nairn County have also progressed after defeating Lossiemouth 3-2 at Station Park.
