GORDON MacNab is set to return to action for Wick Academy for the final game of 2023 when they take on Clachnacuddin in Inverness tomorrow.

The 28-year-old striker has been unavailable for selection since suffering a groin injury in the 2-2 draw against Huntly in November.

But he has been given the all clear to return for the Scorries as they look to end the year on a high and charge on into 2024.

Manager Gary Manson confirmed that MacNab will be available for selection for tomorrow’s trip to Grant Street Park and will be a welcome boost to the squad.

“We should have Gordon MacNab back who has missed the last five to six weeks of training,” said Manson.

“In the act of scoring our second goal against Huntly, he tweaked his groin badly.

“He has been out since then but he should be back for Saturday.”

Midfielder Alan Hughes remains out long term as he continues to recover from a groin injury.

Midfielder James Mackay is also expected to be unavailable for the match as he also continues to recover from injury.

Wick Academy have suffered from a lack of match action as they have only played one game since November 18 in a 0-0 draw against Deveronvale in Banff two weeks ago.

Manson said a major factor during a prolonged run of postponements is the impact of a lack of match fitness.

But they are working hard in training in the hope they can get back to action this weekend.

“We will be rusty as you don’t train much over the Christmas period,” said Manson.

“During that period the weather has been so bad it did make it difficult to train as well.

“The match we played against Deveronvale we did look rusty. I don’t think we were in danger of ever losing the game, but we did look rusty in the final third down to the lack of games.

“Hopefully that will not catch up with us on Saturday, but we are training on Thursday morning to blow the cobwebs off. But at this time of year, you never know what you’re going to get.”

Manson will be taking on a Clachnacuddin team now managed by Conor Gethins, who he was teammates with at the youth set-up at Ross County.

Manson said: “We beat them 3-0 earlier in the season, but they have a new manager now and they have more confidence now than what they had.”
