WICK ACADEMY 3 - 1 BUCKIE THISTLE

Scorers: Wick: Mackay, 26, Macadie 52 D. Allan. Buckie: Sutherland 28.

Wick Academy got their Highland Football League campaign properly underway today after racking up a 3-1 win over last year’s champions Buckie Thistle.

Academy were on top form for most of the game and manager Davie Kirkwood said he was "delighted" with the performance and that it shows that progress is being made at the club.

The Scorries shaded most of the game, taking the first goal when David Allan drubbed the Jags defenders and powered a pacy low ball at the goal.

Sam Mackay put the finishing touch on the shot, correcting it at the last minute to put Academy ahead.

Buckie equalised two minutes later when Zander Sutherland lobbed Wick goalkeeper Allan Bokas to make it 1-1.

Stevie Cunningham’s one-two with Martin Gunn cleared the defence 12 minutes into the second half, with Macadie slotting the ball home to make it 2-1.

Academy sealed the deal 70 minutes in when Weir managed to steer the ball into the box and get it to Allan who deftly flicked the ball into the top right corner of the net.

With nine minutes left on the clock Sutherland attempted to close the two goal gap for the visitors with a straight shot but the Academy keeper kept the ball in play and the game finished with Academy claiming all three points.
