WICK Academy have become one of the first clubs in the Highland League to be awarded a National Club Licence by the Scottish Football Association.

The club is said to have met all of the criteria to be fully compliant for the entry level award for membership.

The award means that the Scorries will be eligible to play in the Scottish Cup after 2015 and be eligible to apply for development grant funding through the SFA, among other benefits.

Academy had to meet five stringent areas of criteria which included standard of facilities, first team football, youth development, code of practice and legal, administration and finance.

Chairman Colin Stewart said it is important to the club that it attained the National Club Licence to meet its ambitions of being a force in Highland League football.

"This is a major landmark achievement for our club, and being one of the very first Scottish Highland Football League clubs to have received a National Club Licence award is a real feather in our cap, and one that we are all rightly very proud of," he said.

"The requirement to address all areas of the club has meant we have had to focus on continual improvement and development throughout, which will hopefully provide the success on the park that this club and its supporters deserve."
