DOING it the hard has been the Pentland United style, co-manager Michael Gray said after the club clinched the Highland Amateur Cup for the eighth time.

“If you look through the whole competition this year, we’ve never done anything easy,” Gray said.

“I trust the guys to ruin my heart because this game was a complete rollercoaster of emotions. Seriously, though, full credit to them. Tremendous spirit and mental strength to take that setback to get the goal in extra time and defend very well.

“Lerwick are a tremendous side and full credit to them. They never stopped and played some nice stuff.

“We had a strategy for the second half but we couldn’t finish the game. Then we get that sucker punch in injury time.

“It would have been tempting to go off on one before extra time because we really should not have let it get to that stage.

“But you’ve got to lock away your emotions and regroup the players and make sure that they still have their focus.”

Lerwick Spurs boss Davy MacDonald admitted that his boys had a touch of cup final stage fright.

He said: “We did have the momentum going into extra time. But then we paid for a lapse of concentration and their winner was a silly goal to lose.

“I think that’s the worst we’ve played in the whole tournament. However, I’m proud of the boys – they’re winners to me. We’ve travelled over 2500 miles to get to the final and we’ll come again.”
