The summer season is under way at Reay, although players in the first events have been faced with breezy conditions more akin to winter, making good scores a rare commodity.

The gents' April Medal was an attritional affair with Colin Paterson winning category one ahead of Lee Parnell on countback after both five-handicappers posted rounds of 81 for nett scores of 76.

Paterson compiled steady halves of 42 and 39, while Parnell managed a birdie at the 14th in a round made up of halves of 40 and 41. Sandy Chisholm took third place with a nett 77 following his round of 89.

It was a case of survival of the fittest in category two, with Ian Farquhar the only player to return a score. His round of 98 for nett 84 may not have been his finest tally over the links, but it was still good enough to take the silverware on this occasion.

In the Corfin Bogey, players used their handicap allowance to play against the course in a matchplay form of the game. Again, the course proved victorious with no-one managing to defeat it. However, Leslie Malcolm did enough to beat the rest of the field, finishing on a score of four down. Ian Farquhar took second place on a score of five down, with Sandy Chisholm completing the podium places on a score of eight down.

The Ward Trophy was contested for by gents with a handicap of 12 or less, and it was John Nicolson who prevailed after a round of 82 gave him a nett 73. After a disappointing outward half of 47, Nicolson produced a superb inward nine of 35, with a brace of birdies at the 14th and 17th holes providing the highlights.

Lee Parnell took second place on countback ahead of Sandy Chisholm after both posted rounds of nett 76.

Meanwhile, Leslie Malcolm won the High Handicap Trophy with an excellent nett 66 following a round of 80. His halves of 39 and 41 included a blistering start with birdies at the second and fourth holes.

This Saturday the club hosts the RJ McLeod Spring Open Texas Scramble for teams of three players with ladies, gents and mixed teams welcome to play. On Sunday the gents will be competing for glory in the George Couper Challenge.
