LYBSTER lost a match but made friends galore following their visit to southern Spain last week.

They faced Recreativo de Huelva who were founded in 1889 by Dr William Mackay, a Lybster man – making them Spanish football’s oldest club.

The Cow Park side faced a Huelva team that comprised veterans from their last spell in Spain’s top division La Liga, and the old boys showed they still had it as they cruised to a 5-0 win.

However, the scoreline was an irrelevance as this was a celebration of the two clubs and their connection to Dr Mackay who is regarded as “The Don of Spanish Football”.

Lybster player/manager Bobby Gunn said: “It was a delight to be involved. Huelva were the perfect hosts and they looked after us really well.

“We were taken to Dr Mackay’s old house which now serves as Huelva’s town hall – although there were a few reminders of who had once lived there.

“With the game, the Huelva veterans showed their class and won 5-0. We’re hoping for a return fixture next year with them visiting Cow Park. They seemed receptive to the idea and hopefully we can sort something out.”
