Mark Mackay of Caithness and Shannon Leslie from Orkney swept the board in this year’s Highland Badminton Group senior restricted tournament as both won the treble.

Twenty men and 14 women from all over the Highland Badminton Group area battled it out over the two days at the Black Isle Leisure Centre in Fortrose.

The men’s singles were played over two groups before the play-off for the main overall winner and also a consolation play-off.

Mark Mackay topped Group A, with Steven McGregor (Nairn) second, as Iain Nicolson (Caithness) and Sam Groundwater (Orkney) headed to the consolation.

Group B saw Great Glen’s Callum Craig top the standings followed by Thomas Calder (Shetland), with Erlend Ballantine and John MacCulloch going through to the consolation. Callum and Thomas fought it out for the top place with a three-setter which Callum won 11-21, 21-19, 21-12.

The main draw saw Thomas Calder take on Mark Mackay, with Mark coming out top 21-15, 21-17. In the other semi-final Callum Craig challenged Steven McGregor with Callum winning 21-2, 21-11.

The consolation event saw young Sam Groundwater take on John MacCulloch in the first semi-final which went to three sets with Sam winning 21-16, 13-21, 21-18. The second semi-final should have been Erlend versus Iain, but Erlend retired – giving Iain a place in the final.
