THURSO Golf Club women’s team of Eileen Manson, Laura Durrand, Nadia Green and Angela Williamson regained the Ord Salver at the Caithness and Sutherland women’s inter-club team competition played over the Bonar Bridge – Ardgay golf course last weekend.

The format was teams of four, with three scores counting towards a team total. The scratch competition winners were one of two teams from Thurso among the 13 who took part.

It was Thurso’s fifth win in 10 years and they were led to the trophy table by their current women’s club champion Laura Durrand who not only eclipsed her club mate Eileen Manson by one shot – 81 to 82 – but also the reigning Northern Counties women’s champion Cara Gruber, of Royal Dornoch.

Thurso’s third counting score came from Nadia Green, an 86, and the non-counting score in their 54 hole aggregate total of 249 was returned by Angela Williamson.

Over the short and picturesque but tricky Bonar-Bridge nine hole lay-out, Gruber began with a lost ball at the first hole and slumped to an 85 as the Royal Dornoch team fell back to second place with 258. Their other scorers were Denise McBride (85) and Liz Coghill (88). Their fourth team member was Christine Callingham.

Durness, who also play over a nine hole course, won the handicap Beatrice Trophy for only the second time in their history. Lucy Mackay (17) 67, Sheila Urquhart, (24) 73 and Janet Cordiner (24) 77 gave them a total of 217 to pip Golspie and the home club second team by a shot. In the card count back Golspie were placed second.
