Thurso Swimming Club took six medals away from the North District Age Group meet in Inverness.

Jed Armitage, Craig Campbell, Aiden Williamson, Edward Mills, Emily MacDougall and Kyla Sinclair all travelled to Inverness to represent the club and all enjoyed a fantastic weekend of competition.

This meet was restricted to swimmers aged 10–14 years old who managed to achieve the required qualifying times to compete.

Between the swimmers they competed in 45 swims, and achieved personal best times in 42 of these, an excellent weekend’s competition, and testament to all their hard work in preparation for the meet.

The swimmers enjoyed a good level of success and returned north with an impressive haul of two gold medals, three silvers, one bronze medal and in six events where they very narrowly missed out on a medal with their fourth placed finishes.

Competing in the 13 to 14-year-old age group, Jed Armitage had the most successful weekend, winning gold in the 200m butterfly and silver in both the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke.

Craig Campbell joined Armitage on the podium for the 200m butterfly taking the bronze medal, and Aiden Williamson completed an excellent event for Thurso taking fourth place.

This was one of three fourth-placed finishes that Williamson managed across the meet, with him also having a similar placed finish in the 200m breaststroke and 400m individual medley races.

In the slightly younger 10 to 12-year-old age groups, Edward Mills continued the Thurso club’s trend of achieving success in the butterfly events, taking home the gold medal from the 200m event.

He also won silver in the 100m fly, and narrowly missed out on a spot on the podium in the 50m butterfly with his fourth-placed finish.

For the Thurso girls, Kyla Sinclair was competing at her first district event in the 10 to 12-year-old age group.

She acquitted herself excellently with good personal bests in all swims.

Again, butterfly proved to be her most successful stroke.

Emily MacDougall represented Thurso in the 13 to 14-year-old girls’ age group.

Like her team-mates, MacDougall performed well all weekend in a tough field of swimmers.

MacDougall just recently turned 13 and was therefore one of the youngest swimmers in her age group.

Yet she still managed to record a top 10 finish in all but one of her events – with a fourth place finish in the 200m backstroke being her strongest result in Inverness.

Coaches said all swimmers could be very proud of their performances.
