Thurso Amateur Swimming Club’s Edward Mills is set to compete in the British championships next month.

His spectacular 200 fly was the crowning moment of Thurso swimmers’ involvement in the Scottish national age-group championships (SNAGs), held over five days at Aberdeen Sports Village.

Edward (15) clinched the gold medal with a phenomenal time, earning him an invitation to the British championships at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.

Coach Kirsty Mackay will accompany him.

Edward was one of six swimmers from the Thurso club who qualified for the SNAGs in April, the others being Tom Armitage, Jed Armitage, Aiden Williamson, Emily MacDougall and Esme Waller. For Esme it was a debut experience and she achieved personal bests.

The rest of the team, seasoned SNAGs competitors, continued to impress.

Tom, turning 18, marked the end of an era with his final SNAGs appearance. A former bronze medal winner, Tom competed in numerous events, making several finals and finishing his SNAGs journey on a high note.

Jed, Aiden, Edward and Emily also had packed schedules, each making finals. Jed had a standout performance, qualifying for four individual finals and narrowly missing a bronze in the 200 backstroke, finishing fourth.

Along with the swimmers competing individually they were all selected, together with Morven Finlayson, to swim in various relays to represent the Highland Swim Team.

With Edward heading to the British championships in July, Tom, Jed, Aiden, Edward, Emily and Esme along with Phoebe Bain have also been invited to compete at the Scottish Summer Meet.

The Thurso swimmers’ journey was made possible with support from Foundation Scotland (Stroupster Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund and Halkirk District Benefit Fund), Dounreay Employees Charity Fund and Caithness Sports Council.
