Thurso surfers make waves at Nordic Games

THURSO surfers picked up three medals at the Nordic Surf Games in Norway as Shoana Blackadder won silver with Phoebe Strachan and Iona McLachlan both winning bronze.

Scottish women's champion Blackadder finished second in the women's competition held in Bore which took place over the last four days.

She won her first round and semi final seeing off surfers from Norway and Finland.

In the final she recorded an impressive score of 7.33 to claim silver just behind winner Guro Aanestad of Norway.

Strachan, who has relocated to Thurso from Edinburgh to improve her surfing career, finished third in the final with a score of 6.22 beating Åse Øydegård of Norway for the bronze medal.

Scottish junior champion McLachlan took on the best male and female young surfers from across Scandinavia in the mixed junior section and shocked the home crowd by winning her semi final beating top male junior surfer Douglas Hammarling of Sweden and Norwegian Emilie Mong.

In the final, she claimed bronze with a score of 6.40 with Christoffer Holler of Denmark taking gold and Marie Milner of Norway edging McLachlan into second place.

In the open competition, Thurso's Mark Boyd just missed out on a place in the final despite recording an impressive score of 9.83.

But he was edged out of the top two in his semi final by Gil Ferriera of Norway with 11.90 and Tim Latte of Sweden scoring 10.00.
