Thurso rink crowned Scottish champions
THURSO Bowling Club’s ladies rink of Liz Rhodes, Joan Elder, Betty MacDonald and Judy Mowat returned from the national championships in Ayr as the Scottish champions after four days of brilliant bowling.
The ladies got under way on Thursday when they overcame the Orwell club by 26 shots to 16.
Next up was Towerlands BC and Thurso prevailed 21-5, taking them into the quarter-finals where they faced Balgownie BC and, again, the Thurso ladies came through 18-9 to set up a semi-final match against Barnhill BC from Dundee.
The Thurso four had an early start with the game kicking off at 9am but were quick off the mark and built up an early lead which they increased gradually, running out 26-2 winners and securing their place in the final.
Waiting in the final was London Road Foundry from Edinburgh but, once again, the Thurso ladies were not overawed and continued to dominate their opponents from the start, producing some great bowls to draw away and run out 21-9 victors and take the Scottish rinks title back to the Thurso green.
This is Thurso’s fourth national title, adding to the ladies’ pairs, mixed pairs and top 10 honours.
