Thurso pupils gain valuable experience in SSBU Secondary Championships

Four pupils from Thurso High travelled to Ayrshire to take part in a national tournament for secondary school badminton players.

Dhaill Mackay and Matthew Cook competed in the junior boys' singles and together in junior boys' doubles at the Scottish Schools Badminton Union (SSBU) Secondary Championships in Kilmarnock.

Matthew then paired up with Ava Cook in the intermediate mixed doubles. Ava and Chloe Mackenzie played in the girls' intermediate singles and partnered in level doubles.

All four did well and gained valuable experience.

Chloe made two finals. In the singles she was runner-up after a hard-fought three-setter (losing 21-16, winning 21-11, then losing 21-17). In the doubles she and Ava lifted the cup, winning 21-18, 21-17.

Results – Junior boys' singles: Dhaill, round two; Matthew, round two.

Junior boys' doubles: Dhaill and Matthew, consolation quarter-finals.

Girls' intermediate singles: Chloe, runner-up; Ava, quarter-finals.

Girls' intermediate doubles: Chloe and Ava, winners.

Mixed intermediate doubles: Ava and Matthew, consolation runners-up.

The SSBU works closely with Badminton Scotland to support and develop badminton in primary and secondary schools across the country.
